Thanks. Joan Didion and John Wayne, quite a combo. Aside from being a cold-eyed observer of the human race, she had provocatively contrarian instincts. She once wrote for the New York Review of Books a take-down of the Woody Allen film universe. In a subsequent issue, the NYRB published a number of long, outraged letters from Allen fans. Her two word reply was. "Oh, wow."
