Erik, I have never understood why Wyatt Earp would falsely claim to have been a buffalo hunter. It's not like it is a 40-hour a week occupation.
Anybody could shoot and skin buffalos. You can choose your own hours and quit whenever you want.
Telling people that you once hunted and skinned buffalo is not going to elicit occupational envy.
I think modern day historians attach too much significance to buffalo hunting.
