As the animals Hurst was looking for were mules, if they were pack mules they would have been assigned to the Quartermaster Department, not any specific regiment. If there was a second brand besides the US brand, it would have likely been QD for Quartermaster Department, oddly enough a brand that could just as easily have been altered with the illicit D8 iron as the US brand.
