Dan Brown
He shot the sheriff but he did not shoot
Sun Oct 23, 18:17

the deputy...Far be it from me to point out the flaw in this jewel, but the article contains an anecdote about Earp, not an actual quote. Nor is it an example of Earp boasting of his shooting the sheriff...

This is not to say Earp did not boast while in Alaska or elsewhere. I suspect that he felt ambivalent about his gunfighting. I also suspect he also felt good about being a bad ass.

Peter, this is nonsense. Kinda like the midget mounty story.

Dan True, but it would be an example of his LYING about shooting the sheriff. This article appears written entirely for an Australian audience. The name “Earp” would have been unknown at that time.... more

Sorry, but you're being led by a story in an Australian paper. Again, the article mentions Earp anecdotally - Earp is not actually present. He is not directly quoted as boasting about shooting a sheriff.... more
        • Peter, there is NO credible evidence of Earp bragging to Parson's or anybody else. Any journalist who ever interviewed Earp ended up frustrated trying to elicit any information. ... more

BJ The idea that only Wyatt Earp, one man, could tell the true story of the west, seems absurd.

The context of Bat's statement was Wyatt's time in the west.

...Parsons had a bad case of Idol worship for a man his age. His posed photo also seems to suggest he saw himself as more than he really was. I always wondered why he was so quiet about Virgil's comradery... more

Joyce Yes, it’s hard not to get the impression he was, in some ways, a bit of the “tenderfoot “ although he did become a leading Vigilante later. And he was a stiriver like many of them, and had a... more

BJ What makes you say this is nonsense though? IMO it’s not particularly damning of Wyatt. But it’s an indication that the notion of “Quiet Wyatt”, a man who wanted to escape his reputation and... more

Peter, you seem really caught up on the 19th century Hollywood version of click-bait. There is no credible evidence that Wyatt Earp claimed to have shot the Sheriff. Why would he have ever said that?... more
