Updates can be a double edged sword sometimes too...

My main computer is getting old.. or is old... I think it's like 7 years old now. Updates are good like you said for patching security things that are internet facing but not all applications need to be auto updated. For example, The IntelliJ IDE I use for Java on my laptop seems to get auto updated to the latest version without me knowning until I open it up. I guess with a newer computer that's fine as I do like the new features and stuff they add. The problem is that because my computer is becoming old, maybe I want to stick with a version that runs well on my computer instead of upgrade to a newer version that will run slower and slower with each update. I just did a quick look and couldn't find where to disable auto updates.

My work Mac is the worst offender of this. All the apps auto update and I feel like they're updated every week or so. It drives me nuts.

I remember reading something interesting about the text vs video search results.. I can't remember where I read it though. It seemed as though younger people (teens/twenty-something year olds) tend to gravitate towards the video results where older (30+) tend to want to read something about what they're searching for. Maybe it has something to do with the fact younger people grew up where YouTube was always a thing? Not sure. It might be complete BS as I can't even remember where I read it. haha

I know I definitely prefer text results as it makes "CTRL+F" easier to find exactly what I'm looking for. Like you said, 99% of YouTube videos are full of useless filler crap. I usually view YouTube videos like public access TV. There's channels I do enjoy, I just see it more as watching TV than being productive in any way.

That's when you want to upgrade and update. I'm running Sketchup version 8 because Sketchup Make 2017 is not different in any important way. It seems to still have all the same problems and just takes more resources to use. I'd have upgraded if it really WAS an upgrade (it was free after all), bu... more
          • seem to require a computer restart when the come. I tend to push them off for longer than IT would probably like due to me usually keeping 5 million things open and it being a pain to have to reopen everything after the update finishes. That's a good point about the text vs video. Usually, I'm ju... more

disrupting the user's environment? Sometimes I get my 4-5 apps open and a restart just kills things. It also destroys my short term memory of where things were and how they were. Sometimes I don't want to save *yet*, I'm trying something and don't want the clutter on my disk. (How many people ha... more
